Our Collective Power: cultural scripting, human rights and the functions of discrimination
A one-day online CPD event for trainees and professionals interested in exploring a space to talk about our experiences of prejudice and discrimination, and what we can do about it within TA.
Our Collective Power
At the end of the workshop participants will be able to understand, define the key issues in discrimination and work with their own prejudices.
"Challenging the Orthodoxy: Embodied, Erotic, Equal" usually refers to emerging social movements that seek to re-evaluate traditional stances on gender, sexuality, and the body. In this workshop I want to talk specifically about assumptions, power and the functions of discrimination. My intention is to create a space to talk about our experiences of prejudice and discrimination, and what we can do about it within TA.
In the last year I have experienced some thought-provoking challenges to my identity within TA. Embodying several minority identities myself, I wonder about the trends around diversity within our TA community, and how my own thinking influences who I am in these contexts.
At personal and interpersonal levels, we all learn our roles. Nobody is born racist, sexist, homophobic etc. Learning to be an–ist is painful. -Isms exist at personal, interpersonal, organizational, cultural level. How can we have a dialogue around-isms and the power prejudice and discrimination engenders? Perhaps if you can understand your own “ism” you can work with all isms.
In this workshop we will explore levels of cultural scripting, and how they subtly work in modern times. We will explore the functions of discrimination for both the majority and minority groups and do exercises to explore our own prejudices. We’ll also do exercises around assumptions, decontamination and the systemic permission wheel.
